Compresas reutilizables Saukhyam: Transformando la vida de las mujeres
Amma inició el proyecto Saukhyam Reusable Pads en 2017, para que las mujeres y las jóvenes tengan un producto mucho mejor para la higiene menstrual. Hoy, la iniciativa también se ha convertido en una empresa social de pleno derecho a través de su producción creando empleos y mejorando las economías rurales en la India.
Hasta la fecha, se han vendido y distribuido más de 500 000 compresas Saukhyam, lo que ayuda a prevenir la emisión equivalente a 2000 toneladas de dióxido de carbono al año. Esto también ha ayudado a eliminar unas 43.750 toneladas de desechos menstruales no biodegradables.

Amrita enters top 50 in prestigious global university ranking system
The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings has rated Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham the top university in India to address the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 41st in the world. Their system is the only global indicator to assess how universities act upon the SDGs.
The high evaluation for Amrita is an acknowledgement of the university’s commitment to remain an exemplary institution through compassion-driven research and education for life overall—a framework that harmonizes both scientific knowledge and spiritual learning to create a sustainable tomorrow.
Haksh-E: The robot who mentors good handwashing
In collaboration with the Govt of India, AMMACHI Labs has designed an embodied social robot to encourage children in primary schools to practice proper handwashing and hygiene. Handwashing with soap is considered the “most effective vaccine” against numerous diseases. Despite awareness, proper hand hygiene practices are not followed due to a lack of it being a habit.
AMMACHI Labs (Amrita Multi Modal Applications Using Computer & Human Interaction) created an autonomous AI-enabled social robot that can help instill habit-forming positive handwashing behavior in young children. The robot is named Haksh-E, derived from a combination of two Sanskrit words: ‘hastha’ which means ‘hand’ and ‘kshalanam’ which means ‘cleaning’.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has announced a new scholarship program to support 350 students from Africa to travel to India for higher education. Envisioning a common bond between Africa and India to further sustainable development, the announcement was made at the Amrita-Africa Summit in New Delhi on Monday. The event was attended by ambassadors and high commissioners from across Africa and hosted by dignitaries from the university.

Rescuing food, reaching others, and preventing waste
Food rescue is still a relatively new concept in the environmental movement. It is the practice of collecting extra food from places like grocery stores and restaurants and distributing it to local emergency food programs to reach people in need. The food is edible but has passed its sell-by date, as is the case with day-old bread, or is imperfect in some small way, such as a bruised apple.
Volunteers with Amma Canada in Toronto began their food rescue project in 2017. Interestingly in this case, it started with a local food bank in a suburb where they volunteered twice a month to serve lunch. The Georgetown Bread Basket cares for low-income families and had to throw away food with expired best-before dates.
Recuperar alimentos, ayudar a los demás y evitar el desperdicio
La recuperación de alimentos es todavía un concepto relativamente nuevo en el movimiento ambiental. Es la práctica de recoger alimentos adicionales de lugares como supermercados y restaurantes y distribuirlos a través de los programas locales de alimentos de emergencia para llegar a las personas necesitadas. Un alimento puede ser comestible aunque haya pasado su fecha recomendable, como es el caso del pan del día anterior, o es imperfecto por algún aspecto, como una manzana magullada.

Sreepriya Rohit is a graduate of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering. She and her husband, Rohit Kartha, currently live in Munich, Germany. Both of them took time off work to volunteer with Embracing the World's station for refugees at the Budomierz border crossing between Poland and Ukraine.
It is for the first time in my life that I got a chance to experience war at such a close distance. It was indeed some of the harsh realities of life that I wish never existed. On 4th March, Rohit and I started our journey to the Polish border.
